State Releases New Medical Cannabis Label Symbol

As the state of Michigan continues the roll out of its medical cannabis regulatory framework, officials from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) unveiled a new label for products containing Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Medical Cannabis Label SymbolThe upside down triangle with a cannabis leaf in the middle is designed to indicate that THC, the chemical name of the principle psychoactive cannabinoid commonly found in medical cannabis, can be found in the labeled product. Cannabis products that contain THC being sold or transferred must include the new label.

In addition to the label symbol for cannabis products sold in Michigan, LARA has released an advisory bulleting containing further details about product labeling. Other information includes the licensee’s name and number, the tag number that correlates with the state’s tracking system, a unique identification number for the product, the date of harvest, the type of cannabis strain, its net weight and the THC concentration.

The sale of medical cannabis was approved by Michigan voters as part of a referendum ballot in 2008. The legislature passed a new statute to adopt cannabis regulations in 2016. The state issued regulations under the new act in 2017 and is now accepting applications for new licenses for medical cannabis businesses in the state.
